5 Things You Need to Know Today, 2/8

Operation Valentine and more for February 8.

1) Today we'll have increasing clouds, with a high near 37. Tonight, a slight chance of snow showers before 3am. It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 31.

2) "Operation Valentine" is FCTV’s way of opening community media resources to acknowledge the many Falmouth citizens on military assignments away from home and their families. The messages will run on Public Channel 13 and on www.fctv.org during Valentine's week. Participants will be offered 30 seconds in front of the camera and microphone to record their message over their choice of a dozen Valentine backdrops. Call FCTV at 508-457-0800 to reserve a time slot to record your message today between 3-7pm.

3) The ArtsFalmouth Annual Meeting will be held in Highfield Hall at 3pm today. Everyone is welcome to attend to hear an overview of the activities in 2011 and discuss 2012. Members will be able to vote to elect board members for the current year. Then at 5pm, stick around for ArtsFalmouth's Winter Gathering. What could be better in the dark days of February than to gather with friends for a good conversation, to share ideas, catch up and have a bite and a little something to drink? Bring information on your work and upcoming performances/exhibits to share with the group and learn about the Arts Alive Festival '12. All this while listening to the lyrical strains of the Falmouth Chamber Orchestra Ensemble! Your $5 donation will support the Arts Alive Festival and JazzFest.

4) Beginning today at 7pm and continuing for seven additional Wednesdays, the Falmouth Public Library will be hosting a Great Decisions discussion group for interested individuals who want to learn about the foreign policy decision-making process. The Great Decisions program was developed by the Foreign Policy Association in 1954, and is the oldest and largest grass-roots world affairs education program of its kinds in the country. Each Wednesday the group will discuss a different topic. Today is “Middle East Realignment." For more information, call the Reference Department at 508-457-2555 ext. 6 or e-mail info@falmouthpubliclibrary.org

5) This day in history: the first execution by lethal gas in the U.S. takes place (1924); author John Grisham is born (1955); and New England digs out after a torrential blizzard (1978).
