Bartender of the Week: Sydney Brewster, J.R. Brody's

Working your way through school might as well be fun.

Sydney Brewster is managing to have some fun while she works her way through school at Cape Cod Community College, studying to be a high school history teacher.

“Oh yeah,” says the bartender and waitress at . “I love working here.”

Though business definitely picks up during the tourist season, Brody's is open year-round, which Sydney says makes it a neighborhood destination.

“You have a lot of local people,” she says. “Saint Paddy's Day is insane.”

A native of Boston, but a Cape resident since she was nine, Sydney has grown used to the off-season quiet, though her preference is still clear.

“Definitely the summertime,” she says. “It makes living here in the winter worth it.”

Sydney says the signature drink of the house is the Brody Palmer, a vodka-infused version of an Arnold Palmer (iced tea and lemonade). Her own personal favorite is a Three Olives Vodka and Sprite.

When she's not working, Sydney's a devoted beach person. When the sun goes down, her favorite places to relax are the , the , and the , where she got her start as a bartender.

Balancing work, fun, and school can be difficult, Sydney says. “That's why it's taking so long.”

While she's having plenty of fun behind the bar, Sydney takes her duties seriously.

“That's why you're here,” she says. “To work.”

That includes the most significant drawback of the job, which Sydney describes as, “having to get up early in the morning,” before explaining, with a smile, that her definition of early is around 10 a.m.
