Boston to Cape Train Planned for Next Summer

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority will oversee the CapeFLYER service, which will launch Memorial Day weekend.

Residents of Boston will be able to get to Cape Cod without a car next summer.

The Cape Cod Transit Authority this week announced the CapeFLYER service, which will launch Memorial Day weekend 2013.

The service will feature five total trains per weekend running between South Station and Hyannis: one outgoing train Friday night, Saturday morning and Sunday morning and one incoming train Saturday night and Sunday night, according to Tom Cahir, CCRTA administrator.

Cahir said CCRTA anticipates 2,000 people per weekend will use the service.

The service will follow the MBTA commuter rail’s Lakeville/Middleborough “Old Colony” line plus two additional stops: Buzzard’s Bay and Hyannis, Cahir said. Buses will be in place to get people to other nearby destinations.

CCRTA is working out specifics regarding train schedules. The service will run through Labor Day weekend.

I love the idea even though the schedule makes it of no use to me personally. However it may be the start of more and better things. If the tracks are sound enough that MBTA commuter service could be extended to Buzzard's Bay and then bus service from there onto the Cape, that could have a huge impact.

If possible, why not use self propelled light rail cars at greater frequency? A review of the bus lines occupancy rates and the number of autos on the weekday roads, should give an idea about the economics, including personnel costs. Should this be successful, and the fares low enough, $billions could be saved of taxpayer money in lower vehicular road maintenance. That's in addition to reducing needs for cars (not good news for the auto industry, which should shrink anyway).

ok, the train already goes to these stops....what is the 'new' strategy? Is the train actually going over the bridge to Hyannis? How???
