Business of the Week: Cape Cod Winery

Fine wines, grown and made right next door.

Kristina Lazzari started the in 1994, with a clear mission in mind: “to produce and sell premium quality wines, from grapes that are locally grown using organic techniques,” she says.

The vineyard, located on 9.6 acres at 681 Sandwich Road, occupies the former site of a horse farm. Lazzari says the conditions are ideal. “The soil is sandy and well drained,” she says, “which is perfect for growing full-bodied, rich wines. We planted Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet and Seyval /Vidal grafted vines from California and New York nurseries.”

Since its beginning, the winery has grown substantially, appealing to connoisseurs with in-person , plus online, and at local stores. “Production began at 500 cases and has increased to 2500 cases annually,” Lazzari says. “The majority of our production is sold directly from our outlet and tasting room located at Sandwich Road and in our online store. We also distribute to local liquor stores and wine shops who request our wines.”

Throughout its growth, the winery has remained true to Lazzari's vision. “Our goal has been to produce the highest quality vinifera wines in New England, using organic techniques and natural winemaking,” she says. “We entered the wine business because of our love of wine, winemaking, and the vineyard lifestyle. We are motivated by our desire to grow high quality grapes locally using organic techniques and to control the quality of our wines by controlling the quality of the fruit. We have also differentiated ourselves from our competition locally for the fact that our wines are produced with low amounts of sulfites, which is very popular for people with sulfite sensitivity.”

While the winery is a favorite destination for summer visitors, it also holds an important place in the year-round community. “We have thousands of visitors from all over the world during the tourist season,” Lazzari says, “and our local friends come to help us during the harvest of the grapes. Harvest is our favorite season because it is very rewarding to see delicious things grow from the earth.”
