Beverly, a student at Barnstable High School, came down with the flu in February and was initially treated at Cape Cod Hospital, according to the Cape Cod Times.

During the illness, Beverly contracted pneumonia and was eventually taken to Boston Children’s Hospital as the illness became more serious.

Beverly passed away this week from the flu complications and word quickly spread throughout Barnstable High School.

Students are donning red and black today, Beverly’s favorite colors, to honor their friend.

Dr. Mary Czajkowski told the Cape Cod Times that counselors will be available to students.
