Falmouth Resident Dan Rose Set To See First Album Hit Stores Next Month
Lead singer of Boston-based Daybreaker talks about album release, music, and his development as an artist.
Falmouth resident Dan Rose first picked up a musical instrument at the age of twelve. In his bedroom, surrounded by a CD collection comprised of a wide range of genres, he plucked at a bass and considered what it might be like to see an album of his own in stores some day.
Ten years later, “some day” is set to arrive on April 5. Rose is the lead singer and guitarist of the Boston-based rock band Daybreaker. The band’s debut album, The Northbound Trains, is being put out by Pure Noise Records, an independent label out of California. The release will mark the high point in Rose’s musical endeavors when it hits stores next month.
“In this age in the music industry, it’s not like we’re going to sell a ton of albums in stores,” Rose said. “But as a guy who grew up buying tons of CDs at record stores, it’ll be cool to see one I made there.”
Rose said The Northbound Trains is “about staying positive when times are less than ideal.” It will will showcase a musical style borne of a wide range of influences. Rose said classic rock like Bruce Springsteen, popular ‘90s rock like Third Eye Blind, modern alternative – Gaslight Anthem – and even one of the biggest name in hip-hop (Jay-Z) have had an influence on Daybreaker’s music and Rose’s lyrics.
Central to the music, however, is the common thread of narrative.
“I’ve always been drawn to artists who tell stories rather than focus on weird abstract meanings,” Rose said.
Even with all those influences, it’s a bit surprising that Daybreaker delved into the Americana/pop rock genre, given the band’s individual track records in hardcore rock. Rose once played bass in Cape Cod-based hardcore band Search, and his co-guitarist and drummer (Jeff Aust and John Ross) formerly played in one of the genre’s more successful bands, With Honor, which Rose said he listened to while growing up. Bassist Ryan Storer also played in hardcore bands prior to Daybreaker.
Rose said his musical tastes always extended far outside hardcore, and that it was time to move on to new types of music.
“I never exclusively listened to hardcore,” he said. “I've always been someone who likes almost any genre. At some point after listening to the same type of music day in and day out you just get burnt out on it. I still listen to some heavier music but I'm much more selective now than I was as a teenager.”
Rose counts Chris Wiklund, who grew up in his old neighborhood in Sandwich, amongst his closest friends. Wiklund knew Rose before he ever picked up the bass or the guitar, and before he ever played his first show, and thinks a number of factors have resulted in his friend finding success with Daybreaker.
“He’s more mature now, and his music has changed to reflect that,” Wiklund said. “He’s always made the music he likes, but he’s never only liked one type of music. I’d say the music he’s making now best reflects his tastes. He’s certainly taken it more seriously. And, of course, he’s gotten better musically with all the practice since high school.”
Rose moved to Falmouth after earning a B.S. in Music Industry from Northeastern University this past December. He lives with his mother and stepfather on Mill Farm Road, and works at the Mashpee Boys and Girls Club. He spent his summers during college on Falmouth as well and worked four summers at the YMCA’s Camp Lyndon Center in Sandwich.
Rose said his interest and experience in working with children and teens and interest in music are mutually exclusive, though he has brought his guitar to work to entertain his constituents.
“Working with kids doesn't really affect my songwriting at all but they always find it very surprising to find out that I sing,” he said.
And imagine how cool they’ll think it if they see his album in stores; Rose probably already knows, given that he was their age when he first let his imagination run that way.
