Falmouth Teen Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver

Monica Mitchell, 42, of Mashpee was arraigned in Falmouth District Court Tuesday on charges of motor vehicle homicide and OUI.

An East Falmouth teenager has died as a result of his injuries after an alleged hit-and-run incident Friday night involving a Mashpee woman.

Monica Mitchell, 42, of Mashpee was arraigned in Falmouth District Court today on charges of motor vehicle homicide (OUI Liquor); leaving the scene of an accident; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; and a marked lanes violation.

The victim, Jack Pearsall, 16, of East Falmouth was hit as he was walking on Old Barnstable Road in Mashpee after the town's Fourth of July fireworks. He was transported to Mass General Hospital Friday as a result of his injuries, but passed away Monday afternoon, according to court documents.

According to police reports, it was around 10:20pm Friday evening when police received a report of a motor vehicle accident at Old Barnstable Road and Leather Leaf Lane in Mashpee. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a white car strike a pedestrian and drive off without stopping in the direction of Mashpee High School.

An officer directing traffic by Mashpee High School's entrance subsequently saw a white Ford Explorer traveling on Old Barnstable Road with significant damage to its front right headlight, fender, and windshield.

Another officer pulled the car over, and the woman driving the Explorer identified herself as Monica Mitchell. She told the officer that she had consumed four glasses of wine that evening at a friend's house while watching the fireworks.

According to the officer, Mitchell "appeared confused" and said she thought she hit something, but wasn't sure what it was.

When the officer asked her to recite the alphabet, Mitchell allegedly stopped at the letter R and said X instead. A cup filled with wine was also found in the center console of her car.

Mitchell was subsequently arrested and transported to the Mashpee Police Department, where she refused a Breathalyzer test.

Mitchell was later released on personal recognizance. She will face a pretrial hearing on August 10.

The motor vehicle homicide charge is a felony charge. It carries a mandatory sentence of one year and a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail.
