Five Things You Need to Know Today, August 23

Three walks and three coincidental deaths.

1. Get out. The National Weather Service predicts sunny weather with a high of 75 degrees. The wind tubines will point northeast.

2. Consider our history. In 1926, silent film star Rudolph Valentino died of a ruptured ulcer. Mass mourning began, including dozens of suicide attempts. More than 100,000 would stand in the streets near his funeral in New York City. In 1927, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts executed the death sentence of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti by electrocution. The government accused the pair of being anarchists who murdered the paymaster of a South Braintree shoe company and his guard. Prosecutors never found the $15,000 stolen. Another man unsucccessfully confessed to the crime, calling it gang related. Protests occured around the world and bombs exploded in New York City and Philadelphia.

3. Go for a history walk. The Historic Society will tour key spots in the town center. The 90-minute walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Hallett Barn Visitors Center on Palmer Ave.
