NSTAR and NATIONAL GRID have both done nearly nothing over the past half dozen years in terms of preventative action. Only after they were scolded for their poor performance in a prior storm, and were hit with heavy fines, did they actually take a pro-active stance. They could have been burying power lines in newly-built locations, but to save money, they didn't. I think all of us on the Cape who lose items in our refrigerator, and/or have burst pipes that cause damage, should unite in a class action lawsuit against them for negligence. You should see the firestorm that NSTAR has to face whenever they try to cut trees back from the power lines, you can't have it both ways. Either the old dead trees need to get cut down or you lose power its as simple as that. As for losing items in the fridge, why not just put them outside it is snowing after all?

While putting food outside is an option for this storm, is it really a plan? The cape looses power every time the wind starts to blow 12 months out of the year. We need a little vision here, and deal with the grid. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing, and expecting different results. Let's get with a plan, and if the plan needs to come because companies hands are held to the flame... that would be their choice.

Mark that is not true. I called NSTAR last Spring to come look at the tree branches covering the lines by my house. I wasn't home but my neighbor talked to them and they (NSTAR) said there was no problem. I wish I could show you a pictures. There are branches pushing up the lines you would be shocked no pun intended.

No excuse for lack of preventive maintenance. The head of NSTAR should resign and our little governor should call for an full investigation.

Fines don't do anything and they just find a way to pass those costs on to the consumer in the form of rate hikes anyway. The cost of burying lines will be passed to us. The cost of tree trimming will be passed to us. Meanwhile, NSTAR is still raking in profits, right? (Good luck trying to read their annual report.) We have some of the highest electricity costs in the country with some of the oldest grids. We have a plant at the bridge that's an eyesore and doesn't run because its power is too expensive. We have a nuke plant that's a little scary right now. To top it off, we seem to fight most forms of renewable energy around here because we either don't want to look at or hear windmills or we don't want to cut down trees to allow for solar farms. As someone said, the definition of insanity...
