Post-Thanksgiving Fun Run to Benefit West Falmouth Playground

All proceeds from the one-mile race will go toward the playground rebuild plan conceived by a Falmouth High School student.

Together We Can, an organization dedicated to improving the Falmouth community, will sponsor a one-mile fun run at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27, at . Entrance fees are $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under, with all proceeds going to support the proposed rebuilding of the West Falmouth Playground.

The project is the brainchild of Falmouth High sophomore Jake Barry, who says he got the idea to rebuild the playground when he noticed its state of disrepair while playing Frisbee with some friends nearby.

Barry appeared at the Board of Selectmen's Monday night meeting to seek a permit for the race, and the board's support for the playground project.

Barry told the board he hopes to see the current playground replaced with “something more visually appealing...and something more fun” before the end of his senior year.

Sunday's fun run is just one of a variety of fundraising projects Barry and Together We Can have planned. Barry said he had already held a pumpkin carving contest, which raised more than $100 for the cause. He said he is optimistic that the project can be funded entirely through a combination of such events and private donations.

Sandy Cuny, Chairman of the Recreation Committee and a member of Together We Can, said both organizations are in full support of Barry's plan.

“We wish him the best, and we hope that you support him,” Cuny said.

Barry told the board he had already sought and obtained the support of the West Falmouth Village Association. He said his mother had also met with Rocky Gomes, Superintendent of the Trees, Parks, Forestry and School Grounds Division of the Department of Public Works, and that Gomes is also in support of the playground renovation.

The board voted unanimously to issue the permit, and voiced its support for the project. Chairman Mary Pat Flynn told Barry she was impressed by his diligence, and urged him to continue working toward his goal.

“You're very inspiring,” Flynn said, “and I hope that you can inspire others.”
