Bank of Cape Cod celebrates Jazz Fest with art exhibit

In celebration of the Falmouth Jazz Festival, Bank of Cape Cod will be hosting an exhibit through October featuring portraits of famous jazz musicians as captured by artist Sean Cassidy.

Jazz Festival kicks off Sunday, Sept. 29, and culminates on Tuesday, Oct. 15, and features a full lineup of concerts, including a Jazz Stroll along Main Street.  Cassidy will showcase his portraits of jazz musicians at the bank’s Falmouth branch at 445 Main St. with a public reception on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 5p.m.

“Over the years jazz and blues music has always been around in my studio when I paint,” said Cassidy. “I find the music very moving and inspirational while working. When I watch live shows I always make quick gestural drawings to capture this energy. For years I have been dabbling with this type of work with a goal of creating a series of jazz and blues paintings.”

Cassidy, who earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, said jazz is a subject he continues to explore and expand on and looks forward to exhibiting at Bank of Cape Cod.

“This series is about capturing the improvisational nature found in jazz and blues, and capturing that quick gestural and responsive style of painting,” he said. “Each portrait is painted while listening to that particular artist’s music.”

After earning his bachelor’s, he moved to Michigan where he received his master’s in painting from Central Michigan University. His work has won various awards and has been exhibited in both national and international juried exhibitions. He is a juried member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston.  Cassidy has taught at Anna Maria College, The Plymouth Guild for the Arts and is currently teaching at Bridgewater State University, Quincy College, and the Cape Cod Art Association. He also teaches classes from his studio.

“We are so honored to have Sean’s beautiful pieces as our next exhibit at the branch,” said Mark Skala, director of marketing and community relations for Bank of Cape Cod. “We are also thrilled the space can be used to coincide with a community event like Jazz Festival. It should be a wonderful celebration of art, music and the community.”
