Cape Residents Continue Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

Next week, Lou Anne Colombo and Len Campanale are heading to the Rockaways in Queens, New York, with supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy. It is the fourth time that the pair has travelled to the area since the storm wreaked havoc on October 30, 2012

Colombo and Campanale traveled to the Rockaways in November and December to deliver relief supplies and toys to those in need. Shortly before Christmas, the pair made their third trip to the Rockaways to help families whose homes were damaged by storm waters.  It was during this trip that they realized the need for help was greater than what they had previously imagined. Upon returning to Massachusetts, the Colombo and Campanale began collecting donations and planning a fourth trip.

“Most of the people we are meeting [in the Rockaways] are not covered by health insurance and are still living in their homes with no electricity or heat, including children, the elderly and disabled,” said Lou Anne Colombo.

“It is heartbreaking to witness our brothers and sisters trying to maintain their dignity in the face of their desperation, and we’re calling upon fellow Cape Codders to help us provide them with some comfort,” said Len Campanale

Colombo and Campanale are collecting supplies for their next trip at Bee and Blossom Florist on Main Street in Hyannis. According to the pair, many people in the Rockaways area are in need of warm socks, toiletries, toilet paper, bleach, hand and foot warmers, disposable diapers, as well as hats and gloves for adults and children.

Colombo and Campanale invite residents of Cape Cod to drop off donations at the Bee and Blossom Florist through Monday at 4 p.m. Colombo and Campanale plan to depart for New York on Tuesday morning. For more information, please call (508) 771-3345.
