PROGRAM: A Genealogist's Adventures
on a Research Trip to Portugal

Find out what's happening in Falmouthwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 10 AM, our guest speaker,
Al Moniz, will give a slide presentation on how his genealogical quest led him
to mainland Portugal rather than the Azores, and how a chance opportunity
presented itself for him to experience an interesting adventure in the northern
central highlands of Portugal. Mr. Moniz will weave a many-faceted story to
include how he first became interested in his family's past, how little he
knew, and what meager clues he had to start with. He will tell how his quest
led him to focus on his mother's side of the family and how that family tied in
with the larger history of Portugal, Falmouth, and Woods Hole. Encouraging
others to visit the homelands of their ancestors, he will talk about one of the
more interesting things he learned on his quest: there is a lot of abstract
information to be had in the old country that can't be accessed here in
America.

A long time Falmouth resident with his wife Maria, and five
children, Mr. Moniz is presently the Chair of the Falmouth Cultural Council. A
man of many interests and hobbies, he has a bachelor's Degree from Bridgewater
State, and has worked in construction and as a performer. Having written a
short play on Portuguese history, for which he received a grant from the
Institudo de Camoes (a branch of the Portuguese government), he is currently
writing a play on Portuguese legends, for which he has also received a grant.

This talk will be of interest to all those hoping to gain
research tips and to include a sense of place as well as historical information
in their family stories.
