Falmouth, Other Cape Towns Could Be Wiped Out by Rising Seas, Study Says

Sea levels could rise by 23 feet over the next 2,000 years, wiping out Falmouth and many other Cape Cod towns, says a new data-based report. Do you believe the projections? Tell us in the comments.

Falmouth, Bourne and Buzzards Bay are among more than 30 Massachusetts communities in danger of being submerged by rising sea levels if greenhouse gases emissions aren't drastically reduced by the end of this century, according to a Business Insider report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Based on an abstract in "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America" and projections from Climate Central, the report lists more than 1,400 U.S. cities and towns that would be wiped out by a projected sea-level rise of 23 feet over the next 2,000 years.

Other Cape towns and villages on the list include New Seabury, Teaticket, Dennis Port and West Dennis, Wareham Center, South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth.

In the Boston area, Cambridge, Medford, Quincy and Revere are also threatened with destruction, according to the Business Insider report.
