Nickelodeon Cinema Sold to Landscaping Company

Despite months of local arts activists fighting to safe the movie theater, the Nickelodeon Cinema is no more, the Cape Cod Times reports.

Hamilton Tree & Landscape, based in Falmouth, bought the cinema, located on Route 151, on June 27.

The property ended up selling for $545,000, according to the website of the seller's agent, Cape Cod Business Brokers.

Jeff Hamilton, owner of the landscaping company, said the convenient location made the offer too good to pass up.

The Regal Cinemas Nickelodeon 5 closed its doors in October after switching from film to digital was too expensive for the struggling theater. Upper Cape Arts was unable to raise the $1 million it needed to buy and renovate the theater.

The news was a blow to the area art community, as the movie theater was one of few Cape theaters to play both independent and Hollywood films, the Times reports.

"It's profoundly a shame," Eric Hart, the director of Cape Cinema in Dennis, tells the Cape Cod Times.  "When that property is lost to the community, it's a loss to the Cape in general. It's sad."
