N-Star Adds New Power Line to Support Cape Cod

N-Star completed construction earlier this month on a new transmission line between Carver and the Cape with the hopes of battling peak demand in the summer heat, company officials wrote.

The new, 345,000-volt line provides a back-up power alternative to two previously existing 345,000-volt lines the press release stated. Another new power source was also installed mid-Cape.

The project cost $106 million and is part of an effort "to meet federal standards for backup power delivery to Cape Cod and the islands."

Earlier this month, officials at New England’s electric grid expected the week's heat wave to create near-record demand for air conditioning.

This summer, the Cape has suffered widespread blackouts when nearly 25,000 N Star customers lost power on July 6.
