Officials Extend CapeFLYER Service to Run Through Columbus Day

The CapeFLYER weekend train service that runs from Boston to Cape Cod has extended its season through Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 14, according to an announcement by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation Sunday. 

The service was originally scheduled to wrap up on Labor Day weekend, but due to high demand and popularity this year, officials have extended the service for the year. 

The weekend rail service has attracted a total of 11,031 customers for the period beginning Memorial Day weekend through Sunday, Aug. 11, according to the announcement. 

The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority, along with MassDOT and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, has been operating the seasonal train, which runs from South Station in Boston to Hyannis. 

"By working together, the successful partnership between MassDOT, the MBTA and CCRTA has provided cost effective, efficient and enjoyable travel to the Cape for thousands of people," Gov. Deval Patrick said in a statement Sunday. "Continuing Cape Rail service through the fall will be a boost for residents and tourists alike."

CCRTA Administrator Thomas S. Cahir added that he expects CapeFLYER to continue to bring in high ridership through the fall. 

"We conducted a survey of our CapeFLYER customers  and were overwhelmed by the positive feedback received," he said in a statement. "Numerous customers and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce have asked about the possibility of extending service into the fall, and with festivals and other events scheduled after Labor Day weekend and extending our season, we are excited to keep this new transit option available to our visitors."

Cape Transfer Connections & Fares

Fares - A trip from South Station to Hyannis on CapeFLYER costs $20 for a one-way ride and $35 for a round trip.

Connections & Transfers - Hyannis services as a transfer point for Cape-wide bus services run by CCRTA and by P&B Bus Lines. The ferry docks in Hyannis can be reached via a free shuttle bus trip, or a quick walk or bike ride. There is also coordination with Hy-line and the Steamship Authority to provide rail-to-ferry connections to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
