First Sunday Estate Walk and History of the Beebe Property at Highfield Hall

Sunday, May 1 and every first Sunday of the month; 1-2:30 pm

A special docent-led estate walk of the Beebe property. Learn about the building of Highfield Hall and its sister mansion, Tanglewood. Explore the grounds and gardens, and hear about the Beebe family members who lived a lavish Victorian lifestyle during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. $5 donation suggested. Walks will not be held in the event of rain. Reservations are encouraged, but not required, either by calling 508-495-1878, ext. 313 or emailing info@highfieldhall.org.

Explore the colors of Cape Cod through the eyes of artists Diana Lee and T.A. Bower. Lee, known for her vivid colors and local scenes, infuses her landscapes and scenes with colors that resonate with energy. T.A. Bower collects flora and fauna from the Cape and uses a digital scanner to create stunning images on a black background. Together, the works of these two gifted artists create a rhapsody of color and help us view our surroundings with a new enthusiasm. For more information visit www.highfieldhall.org.

Kids’ Cooking Club with Andrea Norris at Highfield Hall

Mondays, May 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 4:00 until 6:00 pm

This engaging four-week series is designed to teach children ages 7 to 10 a little bit about foreign cuisines as they learn how to navigate their way around the kitchen Participants will learn some typical meals from Italy, France, China and Mexico.  Children will learn all the basic kitchen skills: reading and understanding recipes; measuring and prepping ingredients; kitchen and food safety; and the satisfaction of savoring the fruits of their labor. They will be encouraged to share what they have learned through take-home recipes and samples. The fee for all four weeks is $112, and includes all materials, recipes and doggy bags! An energetic display of art works completed by Falmouth High School seniors during this academic year. Pieces include self-portraits, watercolors, prints, graphic design, sculpture and other media … a remarkable display of young talent and creativity, and an annual tradition at Highfield Hall! Beebe Woods Nature Walk with Alison Robb at Highfield Hall

Tuesday, May 10 every second and fourth Tuesday through October 25; 10:30 a.m. until approximately noon

Alison Robb will lead walkers on a search through Beebe Woods for Lady's Slippers, showy spring flowers of woodland habitats - always an adventure, and a rewarding one. In addition, she will point out other seasonal plants and animals and help participants gain an understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary natural resource. A bit of history of the woods and the Beebes, and a description of the unique geology of the glacial moraine are included. $5 donation suggested. Restorative Yoga with Carmina Mock at Highfield Hall

May 12 & 19, 9 am

Well-known yoga instructor Carmina Mock will offer two sessions of her popular Introduction to Restorative Yoga to benefit the efforts to re-establish the gardens and landscape at Highfield Hall. This is a gentle session, suitable for both beginners and more experienced students who wish to focus on improving their poses and alignment by working at the slower pace. Anyone is welcome to attend either or both sessions for a minimum donation of $15 per session.

Inspiration, Intuition, and the Inner Critic: A visualization workshop for artists and other creative people led by Tommie Ann Bower, M.A. at Highfield Hall

Thursday, May 12, 6:30 to 8:30 pm

This workshop uses visualization, also known as guided imagery, to understand all three dimensions of the creative process.  Rather than dismissing the inner critic, this technique allows participants to recognize and accept the critical function, weaving it into the creative process to bring you more fully to your work.  Bring journals or other materials to draw what you see in a safe and supportive manner. Word Play: Creative Writing with Terri Lerman at Highfield Hall, Falmouth

Friday, May 13 (and every other Friday to June 24); 10:00 until 11:30 am

Writer and instructor Terri Lerman has twenty years of teaching experience and currently teaches English at Bridgewater State University. Her warm classroom atmosphere nurtures and inspires learners of all ages. Murder at the Mansion at Highfield Hall

Bread Basics: Create Your Own Delicious Rustic Loaf with Gail Blakely at Highfield Hall

Monday, May 16 at 1:00 pm

Participants will gain an understanding of bread flours and bread “language,” learn the importance of accurate measuring, and develop the fundamental skills needed to complete the developmental steps involved in baking artisan bread at home. We will focus on the technique developed by Jim Lahey, founder of the Sullivan Street Bakery in Manhattan and author of My Bread, the Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method. We will explore folding and shaping, and practice mixing our own dough. Bring a three-quart bowl and leave with your own loaf to bake at home the next day!  Class is $29 per person. Books for Cooks: Morning Glory Farm and the Family that Feeds an Island at Highfield Hall

Wednesday, May 25, 5:00 pm

Morning Glory Farm and farm stand owner will share stories and recipes from Morning Glory Farm, an evocative look at how a once-worthless piece of scrub land became an agricultural oasis on Martha’s Vineyard. The book, which was written by Tom Dunlop and illustrated by well-known photographer Alison Shaw, includes recipes from the farm stand kitchen, family members, kitchen employees and several island chefs who buy produce from the farm. Books will be available for purchase and signing, and small tastes from the farm will be available. $5 at the door supports Highfield Hall operations and programs. Visit www.highfieldhall.org.

The Dune Shack Experience: Photographs of Stephanie Foster at Highfield Hall

Stephanie Foster won the lottery that allowed her to spend a solitary week at the C-Scape dune shack in Provincetown. Over the course of five years, she actually spent three residencies at the shack, each time finding herself “reluctant to return to the outside world.” This beautiful exhibition is the photographic chronicle of those residencies. Foster also kept a diary of her days and her musings, excerpts of which will also be on hand. The exhibition is accompanied by background sounds of the surf and the sea, allowing the visitor to be fully immersed in the Dune Shack Experience.
