Use Caution on Bike Path

Current conditions on the Shining Sea Bike Path.

The Shining Sea Bike Path is in good shape now, other than a few icy patches. On Sunday, my family and I rode from Ter Heun Drive to Woods Hole to get fresh air and enjoy the sunshine. I have taken pictures to show how clear the bike path is.

The one icy stretch we ran into was from the most southerly Fay Road overpass for about 50 yards heading towards Woods Hole. The path is heavily shaded in this section and so the ice is thick and very slippery. While the ice does cover most of the path, you can pass this section if you walk around the edges (though it is muddy and slushy there as well).

Don’t be fooled, the icy patches are slipperier than they look, as my son found out by ignoring our warnings. He wasn’t hurt, but he did end up on his duff on one slick patch. He did have fun tackling the snow piles along the side of the trail with his mountain bike, however.

I found the section from Woods Hole Road to the first Fay Road overpass to be clear, other than a few short icy patches by the trail sign rock and the Salt Pond overlook. From the Woods Hole Road parking lot to Ter Heun Drive was also clear for the most part, with a small icy stretch behind the bus depot and a muddy stretch where the wooden boardwalk used to be.

Other cyclists informed me that as far as Chapoquoit Road the path was relatively clear, with a few icy patches, but with enough bare pavement to be able to get through on foot or riding a bicycle. Of course, things could change as today we are getting slushy snow and temperatures are expected to drop once again below freezing.

If anyone can report on the bike path conditions from Chapoquoit Road to County Road 151, please report below. I met many people on the bike path who did not know how to find out about ongoing conditions on the bike path. Perhaps we can keep each other informed through this site.
