Scallops Preparing to Invade Provincetown on November 9

The Sage Inn & Lounge (www.sageinnptown.com), Cape Cod’s leading destination for food enthusiasts, today announced an event designed to help visitors and locals alike enjoy one of our region’s most precious delicacies, scallops. On November 9 starting at 12:30 pm, Sage is set to host the Secrets of Scallops Culinary Weekend featuring their head chef Lucio Garnica and Elaine and Karin Tammi, authors of the new book, Scallops: A New England Coastal Cookbook. Through these  two events  participants will enjoy education and fine food that they can recreate at home.

The sea scallop industry is extremely important to the Cape Cod economy and is one of the largest wild scallop fisheries in the world. However, that wasn’t always the case. In the late ‘90’s, scallops were nearly extinct. Thanks to conservation measures, in 2011, Cape Cod fishermen harvested nearly 4 million pounds of meat.

“We want to educate people about how they can truly enjoy scallops, but in a sustainable way,” said Jeanne Leszczysnki, co-owner of the Sage Inn & Lounge. “We’re excited about this event because it’s both raising awareness about an important local issue as well as showcasing the great culinary talent that exists here in Provincetown.”

Owned by Leszczysnki and partner, Diane DiCarlo, the Sage Inn & Lounge opened in 2012 following a major renovation. A quiet destination situated in the heart of Provincetown’s Commercial Street, Sage blends historic charm with contemporary sensibilities and zen-like touches. Individuals can recharge in one of 19 rooms or in the intimate Lounge area serving everything from herb-infused cocktails to tapas-style small plates. In addition, the facility boasts two private event spaces, which play host to weddings, corporate and food events.

Secrets of Scallops will take place on Saturday, November 9 and consists of two events. From 12:30 – 2:00 attendees will be treated to the Provincetown debut of Scallops: A New England Coastal Cookbook by Elaine and Karin Tammi. Through lecture and demonstration, attendees will get an intimate look at the secret lives of scallops in their natural habitat and will learn how they can help sustain them. Then, from 2 – 3:30 pm, a hands-on cooking class with Chef Lucio Garnica will teach how to create Seared Scallops with Wild Mushroom Ravioli and Tarragon Cream Sauce.
