Ballets of Balanchine and the New York City Ballet

The Woods Hole Public Library
continues its series of  dance  lectures, thanks to a grant from Nancy Lassalle,
Director Emeritus of the New York City Ballet and life-long summer
resident of Woods Hole. The series has  included  lectures and videos of dances of several
types. The series has been  held on Wednesdays
in July, all starting at 7:30 PM.

The next, and final, presentation will be held  on July 23, and will feature noted art and
dance  critic Iris Fanger speaking about the
history of the New York City Ballet, focusing on the Balanchine years. She will
introduce clips of films of Balanchine’s productions, especially ballets that
she has described earlier in the month.

He
was invited to America in 1933, by the young arts patron Lincoln Kirstein who
shared Balanchine's attitude regarding the importance of high quality dance
training in America. Together they founded the School of American Ballet, which
has since grown into one of the foremost dance academies in the United States
and the world. Along with Kirstein and Jerome Robbins, he co-founded the New York City Ballet and remained its
balletmaster for more than 35 years, alongside Mr. Robbins as co-founding
choreographer.  Balanchine  was a choreographer known for his musicality;
he expressed music with dance and worked extensively with leading composers of
his time like Igor Stravinsky.  History shows  Balanchine
to be one of the
20th century's most prolific and famous choreographers.
