Concert by the Proteus Consort
The Woods Hole
Public Library is pleased to present the Proteus Consort, performing early
Baroque Italian chamber music on Friday, January 31, at 7:30 PM, at the Library.
This second performance in the Woods Hole Library’s new "Listening at the
Library" series will feature works of Frescobaldi, Merulo, Cima, Bassano
and Fontana. The Proteus Consort includes Todd Beckham on harpsichord,
Jan Elliott on recorder, Molly Johnston on viola da gamba, and David Gable on
violin.

Harpsichordist Todd
Beckham is the artistic director of MIT's Meridian Singers and has performed
extensively throughout the United States and Europe with numerous groups,
including Schola Cantorum of Boston, the Boston Early Music Festival, and the
Wren Singers at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. He is the organist and
choirmaster at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Falmouth, and the harpsichord
tutor in early music at Harvard University. Mr. Beckham will perform on
an Italian harpsichord built in 1665 and restored by John Shortridge. WHOI engineer/physicist
and musical instrument restoration craftsman Fritz Sonnichsen will give a short
talk about the restoration of this instrument.

Jan Elliott, performing
on recorder, has taught music education at Boston University. She currently teaches
music at her home studio and dance at the Waldorf School of Cape Cod. Jan has a
deep interest in medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and world music, with a
particular focus on the traditional music and dance of the British Isles.
Molly Johnston holds
music degrees from Wellesley and Yale, and has taught music history at Duke
University. She has directed several Renaissance and Baroque music groups
and, in addition to performing, has taught viola da gamba. Both Molly and
Jan are members of Falmouth's Ensemble Passacaglia.
Rounding out the
Proteus Consort, violinist David Gable is an accomplished teacher and musician
who has performed with numerous notable chamber music and orchestral groups,
including the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Boston Ballet Orchestra and
the Boston Lyric Opera. He studied at the University of Michigan and Boston
University. Locally David has played with the Cape Cod and Falmouth Chorale
orchestras, Simon Sinfonietta and the Cape Cod Conservatory String Ensemble.
Tickets for this
January 31 concert are $20 and are available in advance at the Woods Hole
Library, Eight Cousins Books, the Bank of Woods Hole, and at the door on the
day of the performance. The concert will be held upstairs in the main
room of the Library, and doors will open at 7:00 pm.
