Richard Carter, who spends most of his time in Falmouth, owns a beautiful old home, Doughton Manor, in England’s Cotswolds outside the village of Tetbury. At the Woods Hole Public
Library on Thursday, September 19 at 3 PM, he will show photographs and speak

about his Elizabethan manor house, which was begun in the 1590’s. Like most of

the historic homes in the Cotswolds, this house was built of the local honey-colored  limestone. The garden features a boxwood

hedge hundreds of years old.

During his twenty-five years of ownership Mr. Carter has

researched the  history of the house, discovering,
among other things, the identity of the quarry where the stones were cut and the

names of the masons who did the work.

The original plan for the home was very precise, and  received a major renovation in the 17th
century. The elaborate design (by Cape Cod

standards!) has eleven chimneys.

Mr. Carter has undertaken an extensive restoration of the

house, roofs, and chimneys.

In this illustrated talk, he will show many views of the

house and tell some of the history which he has uncovered.
