Falmouth Art Market Features Fordam/Wilkes and Joe Sutton Band

The Falmouth Art Market will feature music by Fordham/Wilkes and the Joe Sutton Band on Tuesday, August 6, along with an array of fine art, crafts, and community information. The event takes place Town Hall Square, in front of Falmouth Town Hall on Main Street, from 2 PM until dusk every Tuesday afternoon through August 27.

The Art Market hosts a wide variety of artists, including visual artists, potters, fiber artists, illustrators, photographers, print makers, glass blowers, jewelers, authors and poets, and more.

Patricia High of High Fly Designs is a regular at the market. She makes one-of-a-kind items in fabric, beads, and paper. Her latest venture is making necklaces using vintage mahjongg tiles and dominos. She decorates them with sparkly jewels, dangling beads, and pieces of silver jewelry, and hangs them on silver ball chain necklaces. Some have silver bead heads and dangling bead arms and legs.

“I call them Mah Jongg Buddies,” said High. “The tiles are 40 to 45 years old. They are made of Bakelite, the original old plastic and are yellowed with age. If you play mahjong, you are going to want one.”

She also decorates dominos, applying preprinted designs, such as Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz scenes or Art Nouveau-style portraits of women. She seals them with a resin and then applies small pieces of recycled jewelry pieces and sparkles.

In addition, High creates reversible fabric totes, most with a smaller interior bag, in summery and winter colors.

“The bags are strong and heavy, great for carrying books and other items,” said High.

High also makes a variety of more traditional earrings, bracelets, and necklaces using beads and recycled jewelry, all with a dramatic flair.

Fordham/Wilkes will perform from 3 to 5 PM. Fordham/Wilkes is a vocal/electronic percussion duo with Ginny Fordham on vocals and acoustic guitar and Steve Wilkes on acoustic and electronic drums and percussion, keyboards, and vocals. They have been writing songs together for over 20 years. Their most recent CD, “People in the Sun,” was inspired by the lives and work of Edward Hopper and Georgia O’Keeffe after a trip to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe.

The Joe Sutton Band will play from 5 to 7 PM. The band includes Joe Sutton on vocals and guitar, Rusty Strange on slide guitar and vocals, Tom Renshaw on bass and vocals, and Ted Fill on banjo and vocals. They play jazz standards, folk, and blues music.
