Falmouth Chamber Chorale Brings a Musical Feast to Bourne

The Falmouth Chamber Chorale will present “A Musical Feast” on Sunday, October 6. At 2:30 PM, the group will perform at Bourne United Methodist Church, 37 Sandwich Road in Bourne.  The concert will be repeated at 5:00PM at First Church of Christ, 136 Main Street in Sandwich.  Both concerts are open to the public with a suggested donation of $5 at the door.

The Falmouth Chamber Chorale consists currently of sixteen members of the Falmouth Chorale. They are going “on the road” to reach new audiences in Bourne and Sandwich where many members of both the Chamber Chorale and the larger Falmouth Chorale live.

The diverse program, ranging from early sacred harmonies to spirituals, folk songs and popular 20th century selections, showcases the individual talents and fine ensemble singing of the Chamber Chorale. A cappella pieces will be offset by accompanied works featuring pianist Stephanie Weaver.  John Yankee, Artistic Director of the Falmouth Chorale, will conduct and occasionally join the singers.

Seeking to challenge performers and audience alike with a wide range of genre, Mr. Yankee has arranged this concert to contrast madrigals with spirituals, classical works with folk music, and sacred pieces with secular. The complex beauties of classical harmony are evident in Faure’s “Cantique” and in Morten Lauridsen’s modern classic “Sure on This Shining Night. Shape-note hymns like “How Can I Keep from Singing” and African-American spirituals like “Didn’t It Rain!” and “Nothin’s Gonna Stumble My Feet” evoke strong feelings with their open harmonies and stirring rhythms.  Contemporary favorites such as Gershwin’s “S’Wonderful” and Lennon and McCartney’s “Blackbird,” and Alice Parker’s arrangements of folk songs like “By’m Bye” and “Goin’ to Boston” round out the program.

“The Falmouth Chamber Chorale is a serious group in terms of preparation, but a fun, communicative group in performance. We like to connect with our audiences,” said Mr. Yankee.  “We always enjoy taking our music to new audiences and new venues and we appreciate support from the Cape Cod Melody Tent organization to help make this happen.”

The Chamber Chorale is part of the Falmouth Chorale, known as the “Passionate Voices of the Upper Cape.” All are local singers who lend their creativity and talents for the pleasure of audiences who enjoy choral music. Their repertoire spans different periods of music from medieval to contemporary and different cultures worldwide. The Chorale began in 1964 as the Falmouth Interfaith Choir, an ecumenical group of approximately thirty singers, and has grown since then to over 100 active singers, the largest choral group on the Upper Cape. John Yankee, well-known conductor, arranger and composer has been Artistic Director of the Chorale since 2007.
