Story Hour for Grownups

The tenth season of Story Hour for Grownups at the Woods
Hole Public Library resumes on Sunday, October 27, at 3 pm, in the Community Room
of the Library. Frank Child and Amy Wilson Sanger will launch the series, reading
stories selected with Halloween week in mind. Actually, the theme of suspense,
mystery, and mayhem will continue through the early winter, as Story Hour for
Grownups explores a slightly different literary genre for several months.

Shirley Jackson was the notorious author of  “The Lottery,” a story so shocking to many of its readers that a good number expressed their displeasure by canceling their subscriptions to the New Yorker, which published the piece in 1948. Jackson wrote many other short stories, most featuring outsiders pitted against accepted norms. Amy Wilson Sanger will read Shirley Jackson’s “Summer People,” a tale about a couple from New York who decide to stay past Labor Day in their New England lakeside summer cottage. Their decision catapults them into a strange world of unforeseen antagonism and hostility posed by formerly friendly neighbors and townsfolk. Even nature and technology appear to conspire against them.

Frank Child, who has a loyal following among Story Hour listeners, will read “Life in Our Time,” by Robert Bloch. In this story that ends with a twist, a scientist prepares a time capsule and enlists the help of his wife, who happens to be two-timing him.

This Halloween-week edition of Story Hour for Grownups will take place on Sunday afternoon, October 27, at 3 p.m. at the Woods Hole Public Library, downstairs in the Community Room.  Doors will open at 2:30. Audience members are invited to come early to greet old friends and to sample a cup of hot cider. The event is free and open to the public.
