Story Hour for Grownups

The November edition of the Woods Hole Public Library’s
popular Story Hour for Grownups will take place on Sunday, November 24, at 3
pm.
The two stories selected for presentation were originally published in the
mid twentieth century in the Atlantic
Monthly
magazine, a journal that for years both launched writing careers
and gave established authors a place to publish some literary gems.

Lydia Sargent, who recently directed and acted at Woods Hole’s Community Hall in her
own play, I Read about my Death in Vogue
Magazine
, will read Joseph Heller’s “Castle of Snow.” Originally published
in 1948, the story is set during the Great Depression. It tells of one small
family, dealing with unemployment and increasing privation, for whom a timely
solution is offered.

Steve Junker, afternoon host at radio station WCAI and co-president of the Woods Hole Community Association, will read John Steinbeck’s “How Mr. Hogan Robbed a Bank,” first published in Atlantic in 1956. With this story, exploration of the crime and suspense genre begun in October’s Story Hour continues. Mr. Hogan, a fastidious man and strict parent, gives great thought to the crime he plans to commit. The key to success, he feels, is to “forget all about hanky-panky.”
