Traditional singer Martyn Wyndham-Read in Woods Hole

Songs from Down Under by Martyn Wyndham-Read

The Woods Hole Folk Music Society’s 42nd season will continue Sunday,
October 27 with a concert of traditional Australian and English music by singer
and guitarist Martyn Wyndham-Read.
English by birth, traditional singer
Martyn Wyndham-Read performs mainly songs of the great Australian outback,
weaving in stories of Australian history and culture. He discovered these songs
as a teenager in the 1960s while working as a “jackaroo” or trainee at a sheep
station in Emu Springs, Western Australia. During subsequent travels he sought
out and learned old songs directly from drovers, cane cutters and bush workers,
performing them to the surprise and delight of audiences across Australia.

In 1967 Mr. Wyndham-Read returned to
England to work with well-known singer& collector Bert Lloyd, appearing on
the album “Leviathan” with young rising stars Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick.

In the early '70s he started the
'Maypoles to Mistletoe' concert series, which portrayed seasons of the year
through song, music, and dance of the British Isles along with verse and
illustration. This show has now been performed
for over four decades and has in itself become a Christmas tradition in Sussex,
England. His recording of these classic seasonal
songs was followed by the long-awaited "Maypoles to Mistletoe 2"
album in 1998; the latest incarnation, "Seasons of the Year" appeared
in 2012. He also instigated the highly successful Song Links project, featuring
top artists singing English songs that have both Australian and North American
variants.
