Emergency Disaster Preparedness Planning

Living on the Atlantic seashore, during hurricane season, requires emergency disaster preparedness planning.

Preparing for a hurricane, tornado or disaster involves emergency Planning, Preparing, Procurement and Providing of emergency disaster preparedness supplies. Just Us Enterprises, the Emergency Disaster Preparedness company, offers assistance in these areas. The facts gathered forthwith, were obtained from reliable sources such as FEMA, Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, the CDC and others. Links provided are for your benefit to prepare for an emergency or a disaster. Each of the four P’s (Planning, Preparing, Procurement and Providing) will provide you with information that could be vital to saving a life.

Planning

Planning for an emergency or a disaster depends on whether you are planning for a family, a group, a school or a workplace. Even though there are many similarities of these emergency disaster plans, each plan has its own unique procedures that incorporate specific disaster preparedness. The ultimate objective of emergency disaster preparedness is to provide the greatest chance of survival, for the greatest number of people, in the event of a catastrophic event.

Family Planning

Families are usually in different locations at any given moment and due to this fact, Ready.gov recommends having a contact card for each member of the family. These contact cards should contain information so that family members may contact another individual in another state or location. Communications may be down, or over-burdened, therefore it would be wise to carry coins and money or a calling card. “Text messages can often get around network disruptions when a phone call might not be able to get through.” (Ready.gov, 2014)  A contact card like the this one from FEMA, Family Emergency Plan Contact Card should be placed with the emergency survival kit, and other accessible means for example an email, which you can send or receive from multiple locations.

School Planning

Schools and workplaces are varied both by size and by location. Size can further be broken down to the square footage of the building and the number of students or employees.

Schools
  • Students must have a contact person and number.
  • Students should have a means of communication.
  • The school or educational facility should be prepared to “shelter in place.”
  • Schools, colleges, universities and other institutions need an evacuation plan.
  • The school should have adequate food, water and basic supplies. A Classroom Lockdown Kit for each classroom is strongly suggested for students and faculty.
  • For more information on developing emergency preparedness plans for schools, please visit the U.S. Department of Education. (Ready.gov, 2013)

Workplace Planning

  • Have an evacuation plan.
  • Have food, water and basic supplies on hand. A workplace Lockdown Kit resolves these basic needs and minimizes waste and storage space.
  • Implement an emergency disaster preparedness plan. Visit: Ready.gov Business

Preparing

Planning is the first step in any worthwhile thing that we do. Preparing is gathering all the necessary information and supplies, and then putting that information where it is accessible in a moment’s notice; along with the food, water and basic survival supplies you will need during a disaster.

Have a survival kit, or an emergency disaster preparedness kit for your family or facility. Keep the survival supplies current. Foods for long-term storage and water or a water filtration and purification system are recommended. Contents of a survival kit, also known as a bug out bag, should include a contact card, food, water, basic first aid kit and hygiene. Many government agencies recommend a minimum of 72 hours of food and water in the survival kit, per person. However, some disasters can take several days, sometimes weeks or longer, before help arrives; therefore, most disaster preparedness organizations recommend up to two weeks or more worth of survival food, water and supplies.

Procurement

Survival kits, are also known as “Bug Out Bags” “72-Hour Kits” “Grab and Go Bags” and other names. There are many different styles and designs, so be cautious in purchasing and prudent in the quality of the survival kit. A survival kit is designed to maintain a person’s survival; therefore, the quality is important. Shown is the basic Single Person Survival Kit.

Emergency Kits are bigger and contain supplies and equipment, geared more to the type of disaster, than basic survival kits. Two examples are the Wildfire Emergency Kit and the Hurricane Emergency Kit (pictured).

Preparedness Packages incorporate different kinds of emergency and survival kits. They are varied as to their contents and amount of people it is intended for such as the Single Person Preparedness Package that includes an Auto Emergency Kit and a Deluxe Survival Kit and a Mini Survival Kit. Another example, the Emergency Preparedness Package - 4 Person w/ Food Storage (pictured) includes sufficient survival gear to accommodate 4 people for a week, or one person for 4 weeks!

Lockdown kits, for work or school, are beneficial preparedness supplies, and should be considered in emergency disaster preparedness. Classroom Lockdown Kits were designed for a classroom of 30 students and workplace (office) Lockdown Kits will accommodate from two to 10 people for three days.

First aid kits, food, tools and equipment are also necessary components of a survival plan, these items and more can be purchased separately for either short-term, such as camping, or long-term preparation.
