Local Restaurants, Local Ingredients

The average plate of food in the United States travels roughly 5,000 miles from farm to fork--about the same distance between Juneau, Alaska and the capital of Guatemala.

If you'd prefer to skip the middle man, you're in luck. Buy Fresh Buy Local Cape Cod hosts a plethora of information, including where to buy fresh food at restaurants, farmers markets, inns and bed-and-breakfasts and area retailers.

And, as the organization points out on their website, there are countless reasons why being a "locavore" may be a smart choice.

Eating local strengthens the local economy and family farms, makes less of an impact on the environment, is convenient and close to home, and simply tastes fresher.

Listed below are restaurants in Falmouth that are members of the Buy Fresh Buy Local partnership:

  1. Crabapples Restaurant  This family-operated restaurant serves comfort food highlighted with local, fresh seafood and farm produce. They also make their pies from scratch and buy their produce from local farmers.

  2. Osteria La Civetta All of their pasta is homemade from scratch using fresh, local, organic eggs. Their menu is small and seasonal, changing to reflect whatever is freshest and available on Cape Cod. They buy their fresh ingredients from Surrey Farms in Brewster.

  3. Bean & Cod A gourmet, specialty foods store paired with a cafe, this Main Street restaurant gets their fresh cheeses from Nettle Meadow Goat Farm in Warrensburg, N.Y. They also have a variety of gourmet meats, local vegetables, flowers and gift baskets.

  4. Cupcapes of Falmouth An all-natural, organic and locally-sourced cupcakery and coffee house, Cupcapes sources their coffee from Jim's Organic Coffee in West Wareham. They pride themselves on supporting organic farmers and have various partnerships with other all-natural producers.
