Amid Wave of Break-Ins, Unlocked Cars Concern Falmouth Police

People in Falmouth are good about keeping their houses locked, but cars are another matter, a police lieutenant says. Do you lock your car in Falmouth? Tell us in the comments.

August, as it often is, has been a "very busy time" for break-ins at both homes and motor vehicles, said Falmouth Police Lieut. Brian Reid.

Between Aug. 23 and Aug. 27, the Falmouth police log included 10 reports of breaking and entering a residence, two of breaking and entering a commercial building, one motor vehicle theft and 14 reports of breaking and entering a motor vehicle or trailer.

Unlike Martha's Vineyard, where one suspect reportedly found most doors open to him as he allegedly stole from eight homes in multiple towns, Falmouth doesn't appear to have a problem with locking its doors.

"I think most people in Falmouth are good about keeping their homes locked up," Reid said in a Patch interview.

Motor vehicles, however, are another matter and one that causes Reid some concern:

"An extremely high percentage of car break-ins are unlocked," he said.

Have you had your car or home robbed in Falmouth? Do you think crime here has worsened, or is it just August? Tell us in the comments.
