Falmouth Man Killed in Crash

The following is from Massachusetts State Police:

This morning (Thur., May 22) at 1:15 a.m. troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Bourne responded to Route 6 Eastbound in the area of exit 3 in Sandwich for a reported one car crash. This crash was reported by Trooper Gregory Furtado who was providing security at a construction site at this location.

Trooper Furtado reported that his cruiser had been struck by an object and that another vehicle entered the work zone and collided with a flatbed truck belonging to the construction company working on the roadway.

Trooper Furtado immediately requested that additional troopers and emergency medical services respond to the scene. The Trooper Furtado went to the crashed vehicle, removed the operator and rendered first aid to include CPR. Trooper Furtado eventually relinquished care of the operator to the arriving emergency medical technicians and the operator was transported by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital. Trooper Furtado was not injured in this incident.

After arriving at Cape Cod Hospital the operator was pronounced deceased.

The deceased operator is identified as ALEXANDER D. HOLMES, 26, of Falmouth.

At the time of the crash HOLMES was operating a 1998 Lexus ES 300. HOLMES was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

There were no reported traffic backups related to this incident.

The initial investigation suggest that Trooper Furtado’s cruiser was stuck by a traffic cone that was dislodged from its original location when stuck by HOLMES as he entered the construction zone.

Trooper Furtado was assisted at this scene by troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and the Sandwich Fire/Rescue.

The cause of this crash is still under investigation.
