Selectmen Juggle Turbine Decision at Monday Meeting

The future of the town's windturbines was up for debate Monday night at the Falmouth Board of Selectmen meeting, but all agreed a speedy decision must be made soon without another town-hall debate, the Cape Cod Times reports.

"I don't think we should drag this out very long," Selectman Mary Pat Flynn said. "Hopefully, by the end of the summer we'll have a decision made."

The selectman plan to have a series of special meetings to address the future of the wind turbines and to study data presented in the Falmouth Wind Turbine Options Process report, a 55-page document published in January. The report outlines alternative solutions for the turbines, the Times writes.

No matter what the selectmen decide, they say it will probably cost taxpayer money and will require another vote.

The wind turbines have been a source of fierce disagreement for quite some time.

Last week, Sen. Therese Murray sponsored a bill to help Falmouth borrow funds to remove the controversial wind turbines.

But in May, townspeople voted in more than a 2:1 margin in favor of keeping the turbines. The vote was 6,001 against and 2,940 in favor of removing the turbines.

Residents living close to the two turbines, located at the Falmouth Wastewater Treatment Facility, have reported health issues consequent to the turbines' installation.

Currently, the turbines are  only run 12 hours a day. At this rate, they will cost the town between $672,000 and $1.3 million over the next five years, according to data from a report, the Cape Cod Times writes.
