The Plymouth Farmers’ Market meant one thing for years - the market every Thursday at Stephens Field. It was on town-owned property based on a handshake deal with Barbara Anglin and her husband, former town planner, Dean Rizzo. Then the town was forced to put it out to bid. A new group took the Stephens Field space.
Calling itself “The Original,” the Anglin market has a new home in a field owned by Plimoth Plantation just off Sandwich Street. The group had an arrangement with the museum for its off-season market in the Plantation’s Nye Barn for several years.
So, how’s the new market place going?
“It’s kickin’. Kickin’,” Dave Purpura of Middleboro’s Plato Organic Harvest said. “I don’t know if it’s the location or all the controversy that got people promoting it, but every week has been better than the week before.”
The market runs from 2:30pm to 6pm, every Thursday. But by 5, Purpura had little produce to sell.
“Farmers need a real reason to come off the farm in the middle of the season,” Anglin said. Dave does a market in Cambridge and it’s always been competition between Plymouth and Cambridge. This year, he’s doing better here.”
The business has increased with the number of offerings. Martha Stone, now of Plymouth Eats, sells pesto and humus, lobster salad sandwiches and humus/marinated micro green puffs. Vendors sell fresh, organic vegetables, local honey, fresh bread and other delights.
