New Year's Week in Falmouth: What's Happening?

Five things to do and know in Falmouth as we prepare to ring out the old year and welcome 2014.

1. The National Weather Service predicts a sunny, breezy Monday with a high near 40  and west winds 11 to 17 miles per hour, gusting to 28. Temperatures will plummet overnight to bring a chillier Tuesday with a high near 31, a slight chance of snow and a north wind becoming westerly in the afternoon, forecasters say. New Year's Day is expected to be sunny, with a high near 29 and a chance of snow beginning overnight and increasing to a likelihood of snow through Friday, according to the NWS.

2. Why wait till midnight Tuesday to celebrate the New Year? The New Year's Eve Party at Liam Maguire's Irish Pub starts at 4 p.m. with a full menu, Irish specials, Rossacroo-na-loo onstage and an "Irish New Year" toast at 7 p.m. A second seating at 8:30 p.m. offers a four-course prix fixe meal ($50) plus a champagne toast, party favors and live music. You can also pay $10 for the entertainment and order from the regular menu at the bar.

3. Celebrate New Year's Day with a walk on one of your favorite Falmouth beaches and keep an eye out for snowy owls, which have invaded the Cape and Islands in unprecedented numbers this year, wildlife experts say.

4. Friday, Jody Scalise, AKA "The Motion Man" will be performing circus acts, illusion, magic and more physical comedy at Atria Woodbriar Place, located at 389 Gifford St. Falmouth. 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., free.

5. Have you met cuddly, playful Cookie? People for Cats, located at 44 Beagle Lane in Teaticket, is open to the public on Wednesdays (except New year's, we're guessing) from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment at 508-540-5654.
