Falmouth Restaurant Wins "Big Chili" Contest

Quahog Republic took the top prize for professional chili at this year's Big Chili contest on Martha's Vineyard, organizers said.

The Big Chili Contest held Saturday at the PA Club in Vineyard Haven raised an estimated $34,000 for the Red Stocking Fund, according to sponsor MVY Radio, which has posted the winners on its website:

Best Amateur Chili (Voter's Choice)
1. Bob Costello, "Official Chili"
2. Jim Pringle
3. Mike Spellman, "Dr Jack's Love Chili"

Best Professional Chili (Voter's Choice)
1. Quahog Republic 
2. The Black Dog 
3. Wicked Pizza

Fewer chili cooks took part in this year's charity contest than in past years, according to a comment from the Big Chili Contest Facebook page administrator that reads, in part,

"Yes, definitely fewer vendors this year (16 this year; it's usually around 22-25 but has been as high as 30). Some years it's up, some it's down. Three longtime participants (each of whom often make TWO chilis) didn't enter. But we didn't hear anything about Red Tape being an issue ... Here's hoping that next year, folks who thought there should be more chili, will take the plunge and enter, themselves!"
