Cape Cod Fishing Report May 4 | Best Fishing Trip of the Season So Far

There are more bass filtering into Cape Cod's waters with each passing day. Even keeper size striped bass are beginning to appear in many bays, harbors, estuaries and even the Cape Cod Canal.

Today’s Cape Cod fishing trip actually began last night, with a trip to the Cape Cod Canal. It’s still early for the Big Ditch, but with the nice weather we’ve been having I just couldn’t help myself. I arrived at the Canal last night around 7pm and fished right until 10:30pm. We’ll talk more about last night’s Canal excursion in today’s Extended Fishing Report. I hit the hay as soon as I got home from the Canal, and before I knew it my alarm was going off again at 4AM. Within 15 minutes of my alarm going off I was in my car, driving down the mid-Cape highway. I had a good feeling about this morning, mostly because I knew I was due for a productive trip. Earlier this week I found top water action, but I failed to hook a bass. Aside from…

Registration Opens for 41st Annual Falmouth Road Race

Each year more than 11,000 runners gather in Woods Hole for the Falmouth Road Race. This year will be no different despite the Boston Marathon bombings last month.

President Scot Ghelfi said there may even be more runners this year as the running community is motivated to prove that a terrorist attack will not deter them. Ghelfi said organizers are also taking extra security precautions this year. “We are in the process of meeting with the police and fire department in town and we will take their lead on any added safety measures that need to be put in place,” Ghelfi said. The board is also hoping to have a ‘Falmouth is Boston Strong’ t-shirt to raise money for the One Fund. Falmouth residents and taxpayers can register through May 7th and lottery participants through May 19th on racepartner.com. The registration fee is $50.

Migratory Striped Bass are Back on Cape Cod

Last night I caught my first migratory striped bass of the season. The bass are back, and they will soon be flowing in by the thousands. Are you ready to get out there and start catching?

After a week of trudging around in the muck, rain, wind and cold (and some sun yesterday) I encountered a small school of migratory stripers this evening – and even managed to hook a couple of them. These fish were bright, clean and crawling with sea lice. Odds are that because they had sea lice on them, these striped bass were recently swimming in the open ocean. Sea lice hitch a ride on stripers when they are traveling in the sea, and then hang on for dear life. Holdover stripers, on the other hand, are typically more dull in color and do not have sea lice. I’ll spare you on the long story which involved a few hours of walking through cattails and jumping the muddy ditches that litter many of our area’s estuaries and just cut to the …

The Bass are Back on Cape Cod

It's still early, but striped bass are being caught here on Cape Cod. If you fish the right areas this weekend, you too will have a good chance at putting a bend in the rod.

Striped bass fishing is starting to pick up here on Cape Cod. Many of the estuaries in the Cape area have fish, most of them likely holdover stripers that have spent the winter here on Cape Cod. This past week I was fortunate to get outdoors, put a bend in the rod and catch a few of these early season striped bass. All in all it was a fun week of fishing, and I think if you head out this weekend and fish the right areas, you too will have a chance of hooking up. Today was a perfect day to catch my first Cape Cod stripers of the 2013 season. The sun was shining and I could definitely feel spring in the air. Nevertheless it is still very early for striped bass fishing, so I had my doubts regarding whether or not I would find any fish. I set …

Tragedy Mars First Boston Marathon

Patch editor gives a first-hand report from the Boston Marathon.

Monday, April 15 was my first time running the Boston Marathon. It was supposed to be a fun day focused on overcoming a strenuous 26.2-mile race, but once I reached the end, I was greeted with panic, caution and tears rather than high fives and celebrations. Monday was a perfect day for a runner and a spectator, it was sunny and warm with a cool breeze. It would be hard to find an excuse why anyone with the day off from work wouldn’t be in town to either watch the race, the Sox game or to grab a bite at a restaurant. I was running this marathon as a bandit. I had no official number and was nervous security or someone from the Boston Athletic Association would kick me out. Once I reached the start line, it was smooth sailing. I was full of …

How to Catch Cape Cod Tuna within Sight of Shore

If you have a boat, you can catch a bluefin tuna. Tuna up to 1,000 pounds occasionally venture within sight of Cape Cod's popular swimming beaches. This article will help you find and catch these close-to-shore tuna.

Three and a half years ago I got a call from my Cape Cod tuna fishing buddy Jason Mazzola that I won’t soon forget.  It went something like this. Mazzola:  ”Hey I was just down at the beach and saw tuna busting about 500 yards from shore.” Me:  ”Huh?” I think most people would have the same reaction.  Cape Cod bluefin tuna are most often caught miles from shore.  These insane fish are capable of swimming across the Atlantic Ocean, and back in just a few months.  How in the world could they be pushing bait within swimming distance from shore? To be honest, I thought for a moment that my friend might be losing his marbles.  Could he really be seeing tuna? The fact of the matter is that many close to shore tuna sightings are actually ocean …
