PROFILE: Hadley Luddy of Big Brothers, Big Sisters

The newly appointed Executive Director of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Cape and Islands discusses the importance of mentoring children.

With its miles of pristine beaches and scores of family-friendly summertime activities, Cape Cod might seem like the perfect place for a child to grow up. But having lived here for the better part of two decades, Hadley Luddy knows there are plenty of local children who don’t have the benefit of stable families or constructive role models to look up to. “A lot of kids out here really do need mentors,” says Luddy, the recently appointed Executive Director of the Cape and Islands chapter of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, a national nonprofit that matches children ages 7-12 with adult volunteers who spend quality time with them in order to enrich the youngsters’ lives in positive ways that would otherwise be lacking. “There are a lot of kids out …

Falmouther of the Week

Falmouther of the Week: Jayne Abbott

Public service and environmental activism are what Falmouther Jayne Abbott is all about.

It is indeed my pleasure to present Jayne Abbott as Falmouther of the Week today — particularly because she has mentored me in effective environmental activism and public service. With regard to the former: if "green" is for real this time — that is, if it is a change in lifestyle both for Falmouth and the U.S. — then Jayne was at least 25 years ahead of her time. Since this column is about living an ethic, Jayne has little competition; her efforts present across-the-board examples. For the past 20 years, she has organized and led the annual spring clean-up of the Waquoit area; …

Jane is one of my heros. I often see her riding her bike and picking up trash along Route 28. She is on top of all the issues, supports her candidates outside the polls and is a vital member of the Citizen's for the Protection of Waquoit Bay. Kudos to you Jane! Nancy Church   more ›

Falmouther of the Week

The Greenest Man in Falmouth

Local farmer and all-around "green" guy Stan Ingram is today's "Falmouther of the Week."

"Green" is a word equivalent to "living lightly off the land." Many aspire to this ethic but find that, as Kermit the Frog said, "It's not easy being green." Thus I offer Stan Ingram, the Greenest Man in Falmouth, as today's "Falmouther of the Week." Stan is the field boss for Coonamessett Farm. He comes with "back-to-the-land" experiences from his years at the New Alchemy Institute and as the organizer of Falmouth's Community Supported Agricultural program (CSA). Both Coony Farm and New Alchemy are in Hatchville, thus establishing this village as the Cape's nexus of sustainable green. Stan Ingrahm is at the center of all this the very embodiment of living lightly. Stan served 8 years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an artillery captain. Not …
