Congressman Bill Keating says NStar needs to do a better job when it comes to providing customers with restoration times.
Congressman Keating toured the shelter at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Monday with Governor Deval Patrick and other Cape lawmakers. During a press briefing after the tour, Keating said it’s vital for customers to know when their power will be restored. “The frustration, which I share about NStar, is the level of public information that they are sharing with the public. People worried if their pipes are freezing would like to know if the service is estimated two or three days. That would help make a decision for them about sealing off the water,” Keating said. Much of the Cape remains without power while Nstar crews continue restoration efforts.
As of 8 p.m. Sunday Nstar reported that 54,000 customers were still without power on Cape Cod. Power was restored for many Nstar customers overnight, as of 6 a.m. Monday about 35,000 customers were left in the dark, according to the Cape Cod Times. Sunday night 306 individuals remained across four shelters open on Cape Cod, according to Barnstable County Emergency Management Planning Committee members.

Checking to see if friends on the Cape have power, and read this chain. Weather has changed. It is more dangerous so when it occurs, such as this storm, what was built over, 30 years?, cannot be repaired in days. We have power outages in western MD and myself, I prepare and live with it. NStar warns customers that it could take several days to restore power on Cape Cod, saying the blizzard caused 'Devestating Damage to Electric System'.
Though hazardous weather and driving conditions have continued to hamper power restoration efforts, NSTAR is working to assess damage to its electric system as it prepares to dispatch repair crews as soon as it is safe to do so. JC... I live in Sandwich and am on day 4 without power. My entire street is without power, we are surrounded by an entire neighborhood with now restored power. We have trees and now wires down on both ends of our street, one end completely impassable and the other end has wires down in the road held up by a small tree. The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said. National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million; NSTAR has been ordered to pay $4.075 million; and Western Massachusetts Electric Company to pay $2 million. The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities approved a 15-year power purchase agreement between NSTAR and Cape Wind, moving the project forward.
NSTAR will purchase 27.5 percent of Cape Wind’s power under the 15-year agreement approved by the state. The state’s approval removes a huge roadblock for Cape Wind to secure financing for the project. The Massachusetts Supreme Court upheld a similar deal between National Grid and Cape Wind in December 2011. National Grid agreed to purchase 50 percent of Cape Wind’s power. “Taken together, these two PPAs provide Cape Wind with the critical mass to continue securing project financing,” said Theodore Roosevelt IV, Cape Wind’s Financial Advisor and Managing Director of Barclays in a press release. Falmouth- A strong nor'easter making its way across the Cape leaves many residents without power. 1,767 NStar customers are without power in Falmouth and more than 5 thousand customers have lost power across the Cape, according to a map provided by the utility. NSTAR helicopters will be swooping over Falmouth today, as part of the electric company's annual aerial inspection of its infrastructure. In a press release issued last week, the company stated, "To help ensure the reliability of the region’s transmission system, NSTAR will begin its annual summer helicopter inspections of the electrical equipment on local rights-of-way on Monday, July 23. The Department of Energy Resources and NStar filed with the Department of Utilities to merge with Conn. based Northeast Utilities and purchase Cape Wind.
Increased clean energy, reduced rates and more financial transparency are the benefits NStar and the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) are touting about a proposed settlement agreement with the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) that includes the purchase of Cape Wind and a merge with Connecticut-based Northeast Utilities (NU). If approved by the DPU, the negotiated settlement would allow the purchase Cape Wind, freeze the base distribution rates for four years. Fines don't do anything and they just find a way to pass those costs on to the consumer in the form of rate hikes anyway. The cost of burying lines will be passed to us.
