Seahorse Found, Freed in Waquoit Bay

Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services had a rare close encounter with a northern seahorse this week, snapping a photo before returning the bony little sea creature to its natural element.

Everyone knows what a seahorse looks like — a smaller version of the giant roadside attraction in Mattapoisett. But how many of us have encountered the real thing?

Some lucky workers for Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services recently had a rare close encounter with a member of the seahorse family, genus Hippocampus.

According to a Facebook post by the Falmouth Department of Marine and Environment, the bony little sea creature had hitched a ride on a buoy chain:

"This week marine and environmental services staff worked in Waquoit Bay to haul the seasonal aids to navigation. While hauling back green can #5, MES employee Chris Anglin discovered an amazing animal that was attached to the buoy gear. This northern sea horse was hanging on to the chain for a ride up to the deck of the work boat. These guys are really cool, thankfully the fish was discovered, photographed and returned rapidly to the ocean."
