Falmouth Chorale's Open Sing; Verdi Requiem

Falmouth Chorale to Host Community Open Sing of ‘Shockingly Powerful’ Verdi Requiem

FALMOUTH, MA—August 8, 2013 —Singers, instrumentalists, and all who enjoy classical music are invited to participate as the Falmouth Chorale and the Falmouth Chamber Players Orchestra host a Community Open Sing of Verdi’s Requiem at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27th, 2013, at the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Falmouth.

This particular selection is unique in that Verdi’s Requiem normally requires the musical force of both a full orchestra and a large chorale, and therefore is not often an option for regional community sings.  Yet none of this is daunting to John Yankee, Falmouth Chorale’s Artistic Director. “The Requiem is thrilling to both sing and play.  It’s operatic, lyrical, and profound. The thundering ‘dies irae’ section is among the best ever written—it’s shockingly powerful,” he said.

This year, the Open Sing will provide invaluable practice, and listeners will hear an early treat, as members of the Falmouth Chorale have been invited to sing the Verdi Requiem with the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra in May 2014.

Originally begun as a way to bring Falmouth Chorale singers back together after the summer hiatus, the purpose of the Open Sing has expanded. It exposes new singers, musicians, and other music lovers to resources in the region, and allows musical organizations to identify potential new members and exchange information about upcoming events.

This summer evening event is being sponsored by the Falmouth Chorale, with generous support from the Woods Hole Foundation. Both organizations support choral group networking, singer recruitment, and community enjoyment of classical music for adults in a comfortable, inexpensive setting. A $5.00 donation is suggested, and cold drinks will be provided during the intermission.  Church doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Musical scores will be provided, but singers are encouraged to bring their own.

The Falmouth Chorale is an adult community chorus that aims to inspire and educate singers and audiences through the presentation and celebration of exceptional choral music.  For more information, singers and listeners should contact Sheena Steiner at  HYPERLINK "mailto:info@falmouthchorale.org" info@falmouthchorale.org, while instrumentalists should contact Fritz Sonnichsen at  HYPERLINK "mailto:sonnichs@gmail.com" sonnichs@gmail.com.
